Gosford trainer Angela Davies has high hopes for promising filly Monolith Miss this campaign.

The daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar resumes in the Jungle Juice Raceday July 5 Class 1 (900m) at Cessnock on Tuesday and plans are to head to Sydney in the near future.

“She was always very quick, right from the first time we galloped her,” Davies said.

“She was immediately on the bridle, on the go and always gave the impression she would develop further.”

The Magic Millions yearling purchase is raced by the Ronstel Thoroughbreds syndicate headed by Ron Burns.

Monolith Miss has a win and two seconds from five starts but Davies said her record would be even better if not for wet tracks.

“She’s got a real daisy cutting action, low to the ground. She loses her speed on wet tracks,” Davies said.

Monolith Miss was an unlucky second to Forward Love on debut over 1000 metres at Gosford on May 6 last year.

“They got under her neck and took her running, she was very unlucky not to win,” Davies said.

After failing on a heavy track at the same track next start, the filly was spelled for 108 days due to slight shin soreness and given time to develop and mature.

Resuming over 900 metres at Scone on September 12, Monolith Miss pinged the barriers, led throughout and secured a four length maiden win in good time.

After two subsequent runs, a close fourth at Hawkesbury and second to Valour on a slow track at Gosford (1100m) on October 7, the filly was turned out again.

“I’ve had her back about ten weeks, she’s thriving,” Davies said.

“While she’s a short coupled filly, she’s strong, a very nice type.

“And the motors there too.

“She might be a little round tomorrow but it’s only 900 metres. I’m hoping her ability will get her there.

“We’re hoping we can stretch her out to 1200 metres this campaign, opening up a lot more options.

“If she comes through as expected at Cessnock, she’ll head to Sydney next start.”
Davies is no stranger to good gallopers, currently preparing Emperor Big Nose, the winner of its first four starts and Preachers Knee, who won five races in Australia before being transferred to America.
